My personal opinion would be that their peak is pretty much a dead tie between the 1979-1980 " Damn The Torpedoes" tour and the 1997 run as the house band at The Fillmore West. Much in the way that Tom Petty/Heartbreakers evolved as a band in the studio, they also evolved as a band as a live unit. That's a bit of a loaded question because there really isn't one good answer to that. Given that the running order on Anthology is all over the place chronologically, do the tracks fade into each other with crowd noise or are there gaps of silence between each? I'm curious so that i could make a playlist from the tracks available. I think the overwhelming view is the Anthology is the set to have so I'll aim for that, but i think there's probably a gap in the market for a good single or double disc set of 20-30 tracks still. Other live compilations also don't always feature these songs (i haven't researched whether they were all live staples). A minor issue is that both sets omit versions of some of my favourite TP tracks like Too Much Ain't Enough, Don't Come Around Here No More, Too Good To Be True, I Need To Know, Shadow of A Doubt, You Got Lucky and Face In The Crowd but i see that the special edition Anthology came with an extra disc featuring some of these songs. Looking at the options it seems i can get 'Pack Up.' for under £7, while the Anthology around £20 which is great value for that much music. A big thanks to everyone who has posted with advice, sorry i posed the question and then vanished for a bit.
